After Irene in the Catskills - 9/18/11

This past weekend we finally got to visit our Catskill house and the surrounding area that was affected by the floods when Hurricane Irene hit on 8/28/11. While the house was fine, the damage to the surrounding area is far worse than the pictures show. For more than 10 miles, the Esopus Creek looks like a large hand scooped the stream flat. As you drive west to Magaretville, manmade debris lines the stream banks... parts of houses, trailers, and most anything you can think of now rests in the flood plain. It may be a decade before the area fully recovers, if it does. We did not even attempt to vist the harder hit areas like Plattsville, Lexington and Windham due to the on going road work. The good news is that the people in Phoencia and Margaretville are already rebuilding and it is amazing the progress that the road crews have made in just under 3 weeks. Take a look below.
